Prototype Tours

Two prototype tours have been lined up. On Thursday, we will have a bus take us to the Austin Steam Train Association yard in Cedar Park, where guests will get to tour all of the amazing equipment ASTA is restoring and maintains. Locomotives include (parts of) the SP Mikado 786 (which is being reassembled), the Alco RSD-15 No. 442, and the EMD GP40-3. Restored cars include the:
Also check out the cabooses, a yard switcher, and other equipment undergoing refurbishment!

We are also excited to have for the first time on tour a Friday morning bus trip to the Capital Metro MetroRail Dispatching Center and Maintenance Facility. Located in North Austin, this facility controls local rail lines throughout the Austin Area, including the McNeil crossing. It dispatches both passenger (MetroRail) and freight (Austin Western) traffic. It's also home to the car barn and maintenance facility for the MetroRail fleet. This is sure to be an exciting visit!

Both tours are extra fare and are limited to 40 attendees each, so be sure to book early.

Clinics

There will be well over 60 clinics this year. Topics include scenery, electronics, DCC, layout construction, signaling, operations, tracklaying, weathering, prototype industries and railroads, and more!

We are especially excited to announce that guests Lance Mindheim and Trevor Marshall will be presenting clinics at the convention.

Lance is an excellent modeler with many published books and articles (and an excellent blog) to his credit, and he runs a custom layout design and building business from his home in Maryland. You may have seen photos of his layouts - the level of realism will blow your mind, but he explains how it's absolutely attainable for any model railroader.

Trevor is also a long-time model railroader, host of the Model Railway Show and TrainMasters.TV, and frequent contributor to Railroad Model Craftsman and Model Railroader!

We will also have dozens of your favorite local and regional clinicians, and we would love to have even more presenters. If you would like to present a clinic, please contact Riley Triggs.

Operating Sessions and Layout Tour

There are a number of operating sessions planned with a total of up to 100 operating slots available. The railroads range from small to large layouts, mostly with full scenery, including both HO and N scale. NOTE: Operating Session selection will be available online prior to the convention, but not during initial registration. If you register for one or more operating sessions, you will be contacted when selection is open.

We will also have an extensive self-guided layout tour program which includes tour opportunities on Thursday evening, Saturday afternoon and on the way home on Sunday. We will provide directions for driving yourself to these layouts. We expect Over 20 layouts will be open on this tour program, including N, HO, HOn3, Proto:48 O, Lionel, and garden scales.

Finally, the local AustNtrak and Austin Model Railway Society clubs will assemble and operate Ntrak, T-trak and HO scale layouts at the convention center Wednesday through Saturday.

Non-Rail Program

The Non-Rail program has a number of great activities planned, including a bus trip to downtown Austin that will start with a visit to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Trips are also planned to downtown Georgetown and other nearby locations for sight-seeing and shopping, as well as a bus trip to the Round Rock Outlet Mall. At the convention, there will be some presentations and clinics as well. If you have something you'd like to present, please contact Laurie Lind.

We hope to have a lot of entries in the non-rail contest this year: The theme is Eagles.

Check out the Non-Rail Activities page for all the details!
